Following the release of the New York Times' film Framing Britney Spears, which addresses the issues surrounding Spears' conservatorship by her father Jamie Spears, the star has gained renewed popularity, especially on social media.

The film details the backstory of the musician's guardianship dispute.

During her Super Bowl performance on the weekend, Miley Cyrus said, "We love Britney." Other stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler picked up on the popular hashtag #FreeBritney in their posts on Twitter. Britney fans created the "FreeBritney" hashtag in 2019.

The "Free Britney" movement claims that Jamie Spears is continuing to manage his daughter's assets and career against her wishes.

Britney Spears has been under court-sanctioned conservatorship since 2008. In his role as her legal guardian, Jamie Spears has decision-making power over her business and financial matters.

The 39-year-old has expressed the wish that someone other than her father take over the position of guardian. However, neither her father nor the court have complied with this request so far. The proceedings are ongoing.

Boyfriend Sam Asghari speaks out

Britney Spears' partner Sam Asghari spoke out after the February 5 release of the New York Times' film. Asghari told People Magazine, "I have always wanted nothing but the best for my better half, and will continue to support her following her dreams and creating the future she wants and deserves."

Spears and Asghari have been a couple since 2016. He continued, "I am thankful for all of the love and support she is receiving from her fans all over the world, and I am looking forward to a normal, amazing future together."
