NFL: The Cowboys buckle again as the Jags finally win one in a preseason finale

Arlington, Texas - The Jacksonville Jaguars played tough against the Dallas Cowboys to close out the 2021 NFL preseason with their first win.

The Jags crushed the Cowboys 34-14 on Sunday afternoon, avoiding a winless preseason and providing some hope for a decent regular season with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence (21) starting under center.

In his first year coaching in the pros after a brilliant college football coaching career, Urban Meyer had yet to see his gameplans garner a win with his rookie quarterback at the helm. But this time, Lawrence was nearly perfect with his pass attempts in the game, going 11-for-12 with 139 yards and two touchdowns in what was his best preseason outing this summer.

Jacksonville’s offense was certainly clicking as backup QB Jake Luton also had himself a great day, completing 16 out of 18 pass attempts for 137 yards and a touchdown. Running back Devine Ozigbo chipped in with 68 yards off of 11 carries and a touchdown.

The Cowboys were playing without their franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who’s coming into this season off last year’s terrible ankle injury and an uneasy throwing arm that’s hampered him this summer. Dallas’ backups were front and center, but their offensive gameplan just wasn’t clicking consistently.

Cooper Rush started, but could only complete half of his eight pass attempts for 16 yards, while Garrett Gilbert then started his day in the second quarter, going 9-for-16 passing with 87 yards and a touchdown. Ben DiNucci took over in the second half, throwing a touchdown of his own from his 8-of-16 passing for 93 yards.

Closing out the preseason, the winless Cowboys totaled up a lackluster 47 points over four matches.

The Cowboys are set to make their cutdowns for their 53-man official rosters by 4:00 PM ET on Tuesday, August 31, to prepare for their regular-season opener against the Bucs on September 9, while the Jags must do the same for their September 12 opener against the Texans.
