According to the Daily Star, law enforcement officers took the emaciated dog to the local Ottawa Humane Society.

The vets found a metal chain embedded in the dog's fur and skin.

But the chain had been there so long that an X-ray proved the dog's skin and fur had grown back around it.

Dr. Shelley Hutchings, chief veterinarian at the Ottawa Humane Society, said: "The collar had cut into him and the skin had grown overtop, leaving two ends of chain dangling from each side of his neck."

To make matters worse, the chain wasn't just stuck under the dog's skin. The whole area around the his neck was infected.

Shortly after the dog arrived at the clinic he started vomiting because he was so sick.

The animal shelter also had positive news

The dog was finally in good hands, and Dr. Shelley Hutchings performed an emergency surgery to remove the chain.

Officials don't know what happened to the animal, but they suspect the four-legged friend may have escaped from an abusive situation.

Despite the terrible discovery and subsequent emergency surgery, the shelter shared good news on Facebook on January 21, 2021. The dog, whom they decided to call Jake, is stable and recovering well. The organization assured animal lovers that his recovery would be closely monitored.
