Christina Applegate reveals stunning misdiagnosis after detailing MS battle: "Back at square one"
Los Angeles, California – For years, it was believed that Christina Applegate was suffering from multiple sclerosis. The diagnosis changed her life, ended her acting career, and made her one of the most prominent voices for people with MS. Now, she has revealed some shocking news: The diagnosis was wrong.
As Applegate tearfully recounted in her podcast MeSsy, a doctor broke the news to her by saying, "Congratulations, you don't have MS."
While those around her breathed a sigh of relief, she felt no joy.
"I was, like, not happy at all," the Dead to Me star admitted.
The news plunged her into depression and completely knocked her off balance.
Her severe symptoms persisted. Applegate can barely walk, still needs a wheelchair for medical appointments, and, by her own account, suffers from all the symptoms that were previously attributed to MS.
What lies behind her health problems remains unknown to doctors.
"So, I'm back at square one," Applegate said.
Christina Applegate was recently discharged from a months-long hospital stay
The 54-year-old publicly disclosed her alleged MS diagnosis in 2021.
Together with The Sopranos star Jamie‑Lynn Sigler, who also has MS, she launched the podcast MeSsy in 2024.
There, both spoke openly about pain, limitations, and daily life with the disease.
Most recently, Applegate was absent from the show for seven months to process the new situation and additional health issues.
What haunts her now is the feeling that she has let the MS community down. She and Sigler have become "poster children."
The diagnosis at least gave a name to her daily suffering and purpose to her advocacy. Without that explanation, Applegate feels lost.
"It's the same game with a different name."
