Greenville, South Carolina - Brian Hickerson, the ex-boyfriend of Hayden Panettiere, has broken his silence on the actor's tragic death over the weekend.

Hickerson spoke out Thursday via his lawyer, Sloan Ellis, who said in a statement obtained by TMZ, "Hayden's death remains under investigation, and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed."

"As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play. Out of respect for Hayden's loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time," Ellis continued.

Panettiere died on Sunday at the age of 36 years old in a rental apartment in South Carolina. Brian was with her at the time, but it was his brother, Zach, who found the Heroes star unresponsive.

Her cause of death has not been officially confirmed, but 911 dispatch audio referred to a "cardiac arrest" and a possible overdose.

Panettiere's apparent romantic reunion with Hickerson has fueled speculation around her death.

The 37-year-old had previously been arrested for assaulting Panettiere, and her mom, Lesley Vogel, revealed in a recent comment that her family had been "trying to get rid of" him before the Scream 4 actor's death.

Though she did not name Hickerson, Vogel alluded to a "toxic individual" as she opened up about her strained relationship with her late daughter in a statement to Entertainment Tonight.

"Although my daughter and I were estranged, it was not for lack of care or love," Vogel said. "It was due to the involvement of a toxic individual who I believe led to her death."
