Olivia Rodrigo's new Christmas song faces plagiarism claims – but there's more to the story
Los Angeles, California - Olivia Rodrigo's bouncy new Christmas song has reminded fans of another holiday hit, but before those plagarism rumors go too wild, someone very important has stepped in to set the record straight!
The 23-year-old pop star dropped her first-ever holiday song on Thursday called Take Me Home (4 Christmas).
Once fans finally got to hear it, many pointed out some apparent similarities to the 1981 hit Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses.
This quickly fueled claims that Olivia might find herself in another songwriting credit scandal, but soon, The Waitresses' Chris Butler took to Facebook to reveal what really happened.
As it turns out, the song's similarities to Christmas Wrapping are no coincidence. Olivia reached out to Chris with glowing praise of the band and asked him to check out her own holiday track.
While Chris admitted he wasn't sure if it was actually Olivia at first, he told her he was flattered by the compliments and that he'd be "honored" to check out her song.
"Her song was/is great. It's going to be a smash, maybe even that elusive Christmas #1 contest they have every year in the UK," Chris added.
He returned to Facebook once Take Me Home (4 Christmas) was officially released and hailed it as a "fantasticbangersmash."
"And if it has the same upbeat vibe as [Christmas Wrapping], well...how cool is that?" Chris said.
Olivia did not credit The Waitresses on the track – which she co-wrote with Dan Nigro and Amy Allen – presumably because it does not actually interpolate or sample Christmas Wrapping, despite the similarities.
