New York, New York - Taylor Swift is back! The singer has surprised fans with the announcement of a brand-new song less than a year after dropping her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl.

After a cryptic countdown on Tuesday, Taylor revealed that the new single, titled Patient Zero, will arrive on Friday.

"I've been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single Patient Zero will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and it's available to pre-order now on my website for 24 hours," she wrote on social media.

The cover art sees the 36-year-old gazing at the camera as she leans against the wall in a black halter top.

Before Swifties get too carried away, it seems that Patient Zero still belongs to The Life of a Showgirl era, as the album title is listed alongside the exclusive CDs available for sale on her website.

The CDs also feature some of Showgirl's trademark glitter on the left side of each variant edition.

Three versions of the single are currently on sale – the original, an acoustic version, and a piano version – all with different cover art.

Taylor first teased the surprise news by changing her Instagram bio to swap the letter O for zero.

"And, baby, that's sh0w business f0r y0u," her new bio reads.

The big announcement comes just ahead of Taylor's scheduled appearance at MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday, where she will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors.

So far, the pop star has not been confirmed as one of the evening's performers, but if the latest news is any indication, Swifties shouldn't rule out another surprise!
