London, UK - Meghan Markle mourned the loss of feminist icon Gloria Steinem with a deeply personal tribute reflecting on their friendship, private moments, and years of advocacy together.
On Thursday, Meghan shared an emotional Instagram post, sharing memories that stretched far beyond their public work together.
Meghan said she was grateful that, in Steinem's final weeks and days, the activist knew "exactly how loved and admired she was."
The Duchess of Sussex recalled Steinem's belief that "we are linked, not ranked" – a phrase that also appeared on a bracelet Steinem once gave her and that Meghan said she still wears proudly.
While the pair publicly worked together on voter outreach, interviews, awards events, and ideas surrounding equality, Meghan said their private friendship meant far more to her.
She revealed that Steinem spent Thanksgiving with her family, cared deeply for Meghan and Prince Harry's children, introduced her to one of her closest friends, and offered support and advice during difficult moments.
The 45-year-old also shared one of her favorite stories about Steinem.
When a woman once worried that her young daughter might not recognize the famed activist, Steinem reportedly responded that it didn't matter whether the girl knew who she was.
"What matters it that she knows who SHE is," Steinem said.
Meghan closed her tribute, simply writing, "Rest in peace, and rest in pride. Look at what you've done for all of us. Thank you."
