Nolan Wells case: Family slams state of Mississippi while urging fresh investigation
Inglewood, California - Nolan Wells' family on Monday, joined by attorney Ben Crump the legal team demanded a federal investigation into the 18-year-old's mysterious death, saying, "We don’t know how Nolan died, and neither does the state of Mississippi."
It's been roughly four months since Wells' body was found off the Mississippi Coast, and while his friends continue to make media appearances for sit-down interviews while threatening lawsuits, the late teen's family is still demanding answers.
The tone at a Monday press conference was marked by sharp criticisms of the official narrative and an insistent call for accountability. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Wells' family, challenged investigators to look beyond easy assumptions, such as claiming he died of accidental drowning, though no water was found in his lungs or stomach, per the autopsy.
Crump said, "We don’t know how Nolan died, and neither does the State of Mississippi."
The family's legal team also focused on the forensic data that indicates Snapchat messages between Wells and his friends had been deleted, nothing that "an 18-year-old doesn't delete his messages for no reason."
Things took an emotional turn when Wells' mom, Christine Wonsley, tearfully declared, "We just wanna know what happened, and why our baby didn't come home."
She later mentioned the grand jury, which failed to press any charges, and broke her silence about the matter, saying, "How can a jury come to the conclusion of drowning despite knowing that there was trauma to his body and despite hearing many inconsistencies?"
Crump emphasized a point that he and members of the legal team have repeatedly emphasized: "Nolan's family will not rest until we know what happened to him."
Prior to the press conference, Executive Director Christina Baal-Owens of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) issued a heartfelt statement: “How long must parents wait for answers around the death of their son? The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has endured an unimaginable loss while still being left without the simple truth about what happened to him. They deserve transparency, accountability, and the truth."
Baal-Owens also said the NAPAWF "calls on the US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to act: conduct a thorough, independent review of the circumstances surrounding Nolan’s death, make clear what federal investigative steps have been taken, and ensure that all information that can lawfully be released is made available to his family."
