New York, New York - A former NYPD officer has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the stabbing death of NYC jogger Katie Suarez.
Ex-NYPD officer Sayed Mohassib was arrested for second-degree murder on Saturday, per reports by the New York Post. He is being accused of stabbing 28-year-old Suarez to death on a Brooklyn footpath last week, on October 30.
Police told the outlet that Mohassib – who left the NYPD in 2022 after a month to join the Marines, only to be discharged for psychological reasons and currently works as an elementary school educator in Brooklyn – claims he woke up from a blackout covered in blood with the alleged murder weapon. The 27-year-old suspect claimed to have no memory of the stabbing murder he is being accused of committing.
The city's Department of Education reportedly released a statement on Saturday regarding Mohassib's arrest: "The city's Department of Education released a statement: "The safety of our students is our very top priority. We have suspended this individual and will move to terminate employment pending the outcome of the arrest. We are supporting the NYPD in their investigation however is needed."
Video surveillance footage picked up Mohassib leaving the Shore Parkway Greenway around the time Suarez was attacked, unnamed police sources said. From there, they were able to track him down to his home in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
Investigators have not yet found a motive for the attack.
It was Suarez's father who found her body on the path at the waterfront trail along the Belt Parkway after she failed to meet her parents at their agreed-upon meeting spot. She reportedly texted them saying she was a few minutes away. She was ambushed and stabbed in the neck shortly after 8 PM on October 30.
Mohassib worked for the Department of Education as a paraprofessional before briefly joining the NYPD in 2022, per the Post. After he was discharged from the Marines for being psychologically unfit, he tried to rejoin the NYPD, but was denied. That is when he returned to teaching in Brooklyn.
