Mother of Christa Pike's victim speaks out after murderer survives execution and regains consciousness
Nashville, Tennessee - After convicted murderer Christa Pike regained consciousness and became responsive following her botched execution, her victim's mother has now spoken out.
Last week, Pike survived two attempts to take her life with a lethal injection. The administration of the fatal drugs reportedly encountered serious problems with the IV lines.
As a result, the 50‑year‑old suffered severe injuries to both arms and remains restrained in a hospital.
As People reports, May Martinez, the mother of Colleen Slemmer, who was tortured and brutally murdered by Christa Pike in 1995, said: "If I could have gotten in that room, I would have taken the box cutter and cut her up like she did Colleen and let her feel the pain."
Speaking to the NBC station WBIR, she added that she had already suspected Pike would survive the execution attempt.
She also speculated that the state of Tennessee might not pursue another attempt to execute her daughter's killer.
When asked what should happen to Pike now, she replied, "It doesn't matter what I think. They're going to do what they’re going to do."
Tennessee governor orders investigation in Pike's botched execution
The reason the execution attempt failed has not yet been definitively determined.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has since suspended all executions scheduled for the rest of the year after the incident and ordered an external investigation.
Pike's attorneys are now demanding that the death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment and have announced further legal action.
