Tara Johnson wanted to learn more about the origins of her daughter, Agnas, whom she adopted a few years ago.

So far, the only clear fact was that her grandfather was from Lebanon. Otherwise, little was known about the seven‑year‑old's ancestry.

"As her mom, I think it's important to celebrate that, not just the parts of her story that began when she joined our family," Tara, who herself has Sicilian roots, told Newsweek.

Tara, who also has three biological children with her partner, was fairly confident about what the test would reveal about her daughter – but she was in for a big surprise.

In a TikTok video, Tara reacts to the results alongside Agnas and her 13‑year‑old daughter Hallie. The seven‑year‑old turned out to be 24.6 % Scottish and Welsh, 23.6 % Southern Italian, 19.3 % English, and 5.8 % Dutch.

The fact that her adopted child carries Southern Italian roots came as a complete surprise to her mother!

"Growing up, being Sicilian was something I took so much pride in," Tara said. "It's a part of my identity that I’ve always celebrated, so discovering Southern Italian ancestry in Agne's results was such a fun and unexpected surprise."

Biologically, they're still not related, but the discovery would further strengthen an already deep bond.

Tara called the finding a shared "little piece of ancestral history."

It was also surprising that Agnas' DNA showed no sign of the expected Lebanese heritage.

For that reason, Tara plans to conduct additional DNA tests that will probe her background in even greater detail. After all, consumer‑grade tests can only provide estimates.

Since the family maintains open contact with several of Agnas' relatives, more about her ancestors will likely be uncovered in the future.

Her TikTok post on the topic has been viewed over a million times.
