Any '90s or early aughts kid worth their stripes has owned or at least borne witness to the kitschy fashion glory of jelly sandals. This summer, jelly shoes are back, and they're taking over the game once more. All hail the once and future jelly!

Jelly shoes were once only known as a kind of kids' sandal, either thonged à la flip-flops or else the traditional basket-weave and buckle-up kind.

But we are in the future and, much like the Pokémon they came up alongside back in the day, jelly shoes have since evolved from those humble beginnings.

This current swell in popularity may have been initially sparked in 2024 with The Row's pre-fall collection of colorful netted jelly flats.

Celebs and fashion fans swarmed around the shoes, with big names like Kendall Jenner shelling out $1,300 to rock a pair of the Olsen twin-owned brand's Mara PVC Net Flat in Venice.

Since then, other actors have kept the trend alive in drips and drabs, with Jennifer Lawrence having been seen repping the all-jelly brand Melissa while out and about.

Melissa – a whimsical shoe brand that has made jelly shoe versions of everything from sneakers to heels to cowboy boots – is a particularly good example of the trend's mainstream appeal, with their wares popping up all over major retailers.

Their widespread popularity likely made the current trend as big as it is right now.

Jellies have since been co-signed by other designer names like Gucci, J.Crew, Loeffler Randall, and Tory Burch, all jumping on the jelly sandal bandwagon.

Chloé has taken a more Melissa-inspired approach, however, with dreamy peep-toe mule slides worn by the likes of Brooke Shields.

The shiny rubber material is giving major Y2K flashbacks, but the silhouettes are totally classy – any way you squish it, jelly shoes are looking better and better. Are you feeling jelly yet or what?!
