New York, New York - Fashion's biggest night just got turned upside down, as controversial designer John Galliano has now dropped out of the 2027 Met Gala in New York.

On Monday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Galliano announced that the spring exhibit honoring his career, which would have tied into the gala's theme, had been called off.

"After much reflection and discussion with The Met and all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time," Galliano said, per Vogue.

"I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it."

The Met's decision to honor Galliano at the 2027 gala sparked immediate criticism. The British designer had been fired from Dior in 2011 after his arrest over a hate crime. During the incident, Galliano allegedly used antisemitic slurs against patrons at a Paris bar and declared, "I love Hitler."

The designer ultimately apologized and claimed that he had no memory of the encounter, as he was battling alcohol and drug addiction.

Anna Wintour, the chief organizer of the Met Gala, had consulted "influential rabbis and Jewish leaders" about featuring Galliano in the spring exhibit and ultimately decided to proceed, but the backlash was evidently too strong.

"John's decision to ask the Museum to postpone the exhibition devoted to his work is very courageous and a measure of the man he is," Wintour said Monday. "I believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support."

As for what the new spring exhibit and accompanying Met Gala theme will be, Vogue reports that more information will be "announced at a later date." The 2027 gala had been scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2027.
