Starbucks' Unicorn Frappuccino is back, and it's sparked a bizarre viral trend among influencers
Seattle, Washington – After more than nine years, Starbucks reintroduced a vividly colorful drink as part of a limited‑time promotion. However, the so‑called "Unicorn Frappuccino" has been going viral online for all the wrong reasons.
According to Starbucks, the "Unicorn Frappuccino" is a "fan-favorite sweet and tart blend of creamy mango flavors, tangy blue drizzle, whipped cream, and pink and blue topping" that supposedly changes colors when blended together.
Videos on Instagram or TikTok often show young people taking a single sip of the limited-edition pink drink – complete with whipped cream and colorful sprinkles – and then dumping the whole cup into a trash can.
The captions usually read something disparaging about the drink and its allegedly unappetizing taste.
The clips have garnered millions of views.
There are also numerous videos from critics accusing the influencers of pointless food waste just for the sake of clout.
At the center of it all is the "Unicorn Frappuccino," which Starbucks briefly launched in 2017 and then offered again exclusively this week as part of a worldwide promotion.
Starbucks itself had hoped for a massive social media hype and, in a statement, even encouraged customers to come to the stores dressed as unicorns.
Alas, smashing the drink into the trash turned out to be the more popular trend!
"Unicorn Frappuccino" nets Starbucks a record‑breaking weekend
Regardless of whether it ended up in a stomach or the trash, Starbucks celebrated a record‑breaking weekend of sales.
"Over the weekend, we sold more than 2 million Unicorn Frappuccino® Blended Beverages in our North America company-operated coffeehouses," they announced in a statement.
"August 15 [became] our biggest Saturday sales day ever for our North America company-operated business," they added.
Maybe some people do like it – or maybe all of the purchases ended in people immediately throwing the drinks out? (Hey, a sale is a sale.)
Whether or not the Unicorn Frappuccino actually tastes as terrible as the influencers claim can’t actually be definitively judged, however.
Taste, as we all know, is highly subjective.
