San Antonio, Texas – A shocking moment in the stadium during a college football game in San Antonio left a member of the Air Force dead. The man was lowering himself from a roof structure as part of a stunt and fell several feet to the ground.
According to TMZ, the accident occurred on Saturday evening. Hundreds of sports fans packed the Alamodome to watch the football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the Navy.
Initial reports indicate that four members of a combat training squad were supposed to rappel from the arena onto the field, Task & Purpose explained. During the “pre‑game show,” one of the soldiers lost his grip on the rope, fell, and hit the ground.
Both the football players and the medical personnel on site rushed to the man's aid, and shortly thereafter they evacuated the injured man from the stadium.
A short time later, the Air Force confirmed that the man had died. The identity of the deceased service member has not yet been released.
UTSA released a statement on social media Saturday night, saying the university was “deeply saddened by the incident," and offering its “heartfelt thoughts and prayers” for the impacted soldier, their friends, and their family members.
"The incident is under investigation. Further information will be released as soon as it becomes available," said a spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base.
