Salado, Texas - A US Army helicopter crashed near Salado, Texas on Wednesday, killing two soldiers, according to the military installation where the aircraft was based.

"An AH-64E Apache attack helicopter based at Fort Hood crashed on Wednesday in Salado," Fort Hood's media center said in a press release.

"Two soldiers are confirmed deceased. Names are being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin," the base confirmed.

"Fort Hood personnel remain on scene working in coordination with local first responders."

The statement did not provide any details on what the aircraft was doing at the time of the crash, nor the precise location or cause of the accident.

The deadly helicopter crash comes around two months after a US Air Force B-52 bomber crashed in California, killing all eight people on board.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families, friends, and fellow Troopers of those involved during this incredibly difficult time," Brigadier General Ethan Diven, the First Cavalry Division's acting commanding general, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Footage and photographs released by members of the press show a fiery wreckage in what looks like a field.

"Today, our Army family and our nation are mourning a heartbreaking loss," said Texas Republican Congressman Wesley Hunt in a heartfelt post to X.

"As a West Point graduate and former Apache helicopter pilot myself, this tragedy hits especially close to home," Hunt said. "I know the aircraft."

"Every flight carries with it an immense responsibility, and every soldier who takes to the skies does so knowing the risks that come with defending this nation," he continued.

"Their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. May God comfort their families, protect our men and women in uniform, and continue to bless the United States of America."
