New York, New York - New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over the weekend announced she plans to undergo fertility treatment and have her eggs frozen "to feel more in control of my life."

The 36-year-old congresswoman revealed her decision in an Instagram stories livestream over the weekend, explaining that she'd been saving up for the procedure over a number of years and had struggled with a lack of information.

"Usually, I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs," AOC revealed in the stream. "I want to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time."

"I think that, you know, I was saving for it for a very long time, and there just isn't a ton [of information] out there, I feel, and sometimes it can feel very daunting."

She explained that there was a lot of preparation involved, but her first injection "wasn't so bad."

Women "are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause, whether that is in so many different aspects of our lives," she said.

AOC used the opportunity to rail against the Trump administration, which she said is "dedicated to politicizing women's bodies and taking our choices away."

She said the current US government has made pregnancy "more dangerous" than it has been in decades.

She also pointed out that, as a young woman in Congress, she faces a particularly unique challenge and major double standards when compared to men.

"People don't think in the back of their mind: 'Okay, this guy's running for office, how old is he? Oh, well, is he gonna wanna start a family?'" she said.

"This is a choice I am making to feel more in control of my life."
