Washington DC - Former President Barack Obama has announced the death of his widely loved family dog, Sunny. The pup was first adopted at the start of his second term in office as president.

"Yesterday, we lost a cherished member of our family," the Democrat began in a Wednesday X post.

He continued, noting how he, his wife Michelle Obama, their two daughters Malia and Sasha, and the family's first dog Bo "immediately fell in love" with Sunny when they first got her as a puppy in August of 2013.

She, like her older canine brother, was a Portuguese Water Dog.

The politician admits that they all had some trouble keeping up with her, "for Sunny was a force of nature."

The athletic animal was full of "boundless energy," leaping over the White House's South Lawn hedges and chasing squirrels or any other small animals that came across her path.

"Whereas the way to Bo’s heart usually involved a treat, Sunny was more interested in having us run around with her, roll on the floor with her, or have her belly rubbed for as long as we were willing," the former president wrote.

"She loved the girls, even if they were pestering her when she was napping. She loved our team, and would often follow them around, helping them on the job. She was fiercely protective of Bo, who she rightly sensed wasn’t always as alert and attentive as she was."

Obama added that Sunny had a few particular eccentricities – aside from Bo, she preferred people to dogs, and she was a "Water Dog" who hated getting wet.

Despite these lovable quirks, "she was pretty much perfect, and for thirteen years, she would be by our side – always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days."

Obama ended the post by writing, "We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay."
