Detroit, Michigan - After a public feud with Democratic candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, Haley Stevens has crossed the aisle to endorse Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's heated Senate race.
Stevens dropped the bombshell endorsement on Sunday after high-profile drama with her party's candidate.
"My vote for Senate is going to be with Mike Rogers, and I will tell you why. Because we have to stand with country," she said, per CNN.
"We can't stand with hate. We can't stand with Hasan Piker," Stevens added, referring to the left-wing streamer who has backed El-Sayed on the campaign trail.
Despite endorsing the Trump-backed candidate, Stevens insisted that she wasn't turning her back on the Democrats.
"90% of the votes I'm going to cast are going to be for Democrats," she declared.
Her decision quickly sparked outrage from her party.
At a press conference, Stevens was heckled with calls branding her a "traitor," while both her chief of staff and communications director have resigned.
Michigan's Democratic Party leaders said the congresswoman "abandoned everything she claims to care about" and called Rogers "a rubber stamp for Trump's toxic agenda."
Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who threw his support behind Stevens in the Democratic primary, insisted, "Senate Democrats are united in our support for Abdul El-Sayed, because we know he will fight for the economic interests of working families in Michigan, unlike Mike Rogers, who is a tool of Donald Trump and billionaire donors."
El-Sayed has not yet responded to the endorsement but previously accused Stevens of "relitigating a primary that ended three months ago" and distracting voters.
