Democrats label Trump's DOJ raid on Ilhan Omar's home a "disgusting abuse of power"
Washington DC - Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar is speaking out after her home was searched by federal agents at the order of President Donald Trump's Department of Justice, telling supporters, "I will not be silenced." Democrats are coming to her defense, as well, saying the search shows the president is "weaponizing the federal government against a political rival."
Omar kept quiet about the search of her home until midday Monday, when she broke her silence with a telling post on X.
"I'm ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement," Omar wrote.
"For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced."
Several notable politicians are actively defending Omar, who serves Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said, "This morning's raid on the home of Ilhan Omar, a sitting member of Congress, has all the hallmarks of Donald Trump weaponizing the federal government against a political rival.
"Trump’s action marks a dangerous escalation of his authoritarian and fundamentally un-American behavior. It’s also an extension of his racist attacks on Somali Americans and yet another attempt to throw chaos into our elections."
Rep. Ro Khanna of California said in a video posted on X that the raid of Omar's home was "simply chilling."
"It's disturbing that they are targeting Muslim Americans, and a Muslim American woman legislator," Khanna said. "Any decent American needs to stand up and speak out."
Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina reposted Khanna's video, pointing the finger at the left: "Trump's political enemy raided his home. Democrats set the precedent."
Rep. Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat serving Arizona, labeled Monday's raid on Omar's home "fascism and abuse of office on a scale we have never seen," while
Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington called the DHS raid " a disgusting abuse of power from an out of control president."
Omar has been a vocal critic of Trump since she was first elected to Congress in 2018, routinely calling out his administration's policies and rhetoric.
