New York, New York - A federal judge on Thursday tossed a lawsuit from President Donald Trump's administration that had challenged New York City's sanctuary laws.

In the 25-page ruling, District Judge Ramón Reyes ruled that sanctuary policies, which set limits on how city agencies interact and cooperate with federal immigration authorities, did not conflict with federal law, as forcing local officials to comply would constitute federal overreach.

Overall, Reyes ruled the Trump administration, which filed the suit last year, lacked legal standing.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated the ruling in an X post and argued that "Every New Yorker deserves to seek help from their city without fear of being targeted for deportation.

"We will stand by our immigrant neighbors, defend our laws and protect the promise that this city belongs to all of us," he added.

Since taking office for his second term, Trump has pushed an aggressive immigration agenda in which he has sent federal agents to Democrat-run cities across the country to carry out aggressive deportation sweeps.

His efforts have led to messy public feuds with Democratic leaders who have stood by sanctuary policies, including Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Governor Gavin Newsom of California, and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.

Mamdani and Hochul have recently been clashing with the Department of Homeland Security after ICE officers last week shot a man in the neck while his five-year-old child was nearby in the Bronx.
