Melania makes rare appearance with Trump to sign executive order on women's health
Washington DC - President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on Monday signed an executive order at the White House that they claim will change the government's approach to women's health.
The order seeks to streamline the creation of a women's health division within the National Institutes of Health and a White House Women's Health Task Force.
It also aims to prioritize research funding for health issues that disproportionately affect women, incorporate artificial intelligence into medicine, and make conversations about women's health less taboo.
During a speech, Trump credited the first lady for coming up with the ideas behind the order, and praised her for having "accomplished so much in a short period of time."
He also made reference to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles' recent battle with breast cancer.
"It wasn't easy. We went through it, we got her through it, and she got through it, and she's tough," he said.
Melania described the signing as "a transformative moment for women in America" as the Trump administration is working to "change the reality of women's health."
"Previous generations fought for women's rights. Our generation will fight to discover the cures that will ensure a woman can live her life in health and to the fullest," she added.
The order does not specify the exact issues the administration plans to focus on, or those it may choose not to prioritize, such as reproductive rights.
