According to CNN, forces in the Middle East are prepared to carry out new military operations against the country "within 96 hours of receiving" orders from the president.

One government official described it as "a big effort," while others have said it is not a matter of if but when Trump will issue such an order.

Some officials believe the order may come before the end of the year, sometime after the midterm elections in November.

Trump's decision to launch the war alongside Israel back in July has continued to put pressure on Americans, as it has raised prices on everyday goods, most notably gas.

He and his allies in turn have argued it's a "small price to pay."

The president has repeatedly bounced between promising the end is near and threatening the destruction of the country.

One source told CNN that if Trump does order an attack, Tehran and the Houthis – who have taken threats like this seriously and are preparing such a scenario – "would likely retaliate immediately by targeting American personnel and facilities around the region – and potentially beyond."

In a statement, a senior Pentagon official told the outlet, "The Department is a planning organization, and its job is to develop and execute military options ordered by the President."
