Senior GOP senator slams Trump's "holy war" against Pope Leo XIV

Washington DC - MAGA Republican and Louisiana Senator John Kennedy condemned President Donald Trump for waging what he called a "holy war" against Pope Leo XIV.

"I love the president like a taco," Kennedy said in a Sunday appearance on Fox News' The Big Weekend Show. "I don't always agree with him, but I think he wants a better world."

"But I don't agree with him about this new holy war with the pope," Kennedy went on. "Look, I'm not Catholic, I was raised a Presbyterian… I have great respect for Catholicism, and even if I didn't, the Pope is entitled to his opinion."

"Why do we want to have a fight with the pope? It's a distraction, and the press just sucks it up like a Hoover Deluxe. I would like to see the president talk about all we have done to control the cost of living."

Kennedy's comments were a curious choice of words that may not sit well with many MAGA supporters, as the term "TACO" is a common acronym used by the president's critics, standing for "Trump Always Chickens Out."

He went on to say Trump is not the "daddy" of the US' inflation woes, but that he needs to "raise the child."

His comments came nearly two weeks after Trump threatened genocide against the Iranian people, declaring that a "whole civilization will die" if Tehran didn't stop its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident triggered an ongoing spat between Trump and Pope Leo XIV, who declared last week that "I have no fear, neither of the Trump administration, nor speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel."
