Washington DC - President Donald Trump was forced to cut short his weekend plans at Camp David and unexpectedly rushed back to the White House on Saturday, likely due to a flair of tensions in the Middle East.

The White House offered no explanation as to why Trump was rushed back to Washington from Camp David, a secluded presidential complex in rural Maryland, on Saturday night.

It is common for White House travel to change on weekends, including for weather reasons – forecasts showed rain and thunderstorms in the Camp David area on Sunday – but the sudden nature of this return is fueling speculation it's about something else.

Most notably, the change of plans came as the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthis said on Saturday that the Iran-backed group fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh at dawn, causing a fire to break out near the city's international airport.

The State Department and a string of US embassies issued security alerts to Americans, citing "the potential for unforeseen escalation." They noted that "Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports."

"This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly," the State Department warned. "Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region."

"US diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted," the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia said.

"Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including US businesses and other institutions."
