Trump backed Michigan candidate loses primary to challenger who dropped out of race

Grand Blanc, Michigan - Amir Hassan, a Michigan congressional candidate enthusiastically endorsed by President Donald Trump, recently lost his primary race in a particularly embarrassing way.

According to The Washington Post, Hassan has been projected to lose the primary to Thomas Smith, as results show him down by an astounding 17 points.

But Smith had notably suspended his campaign in mid-July, and while he didn't formally withdraw, he did urge party voters to support a third candidate, Al Lemmo.

In a video shared on X, Hassan lamented that he and his campaign "fell short," and though he doesn't "understand" why, he vowed to keep fighting for his conservative values.

The loss comes as Republicans are struggling to maintain their razor-thin majorities in the House and Senate ahead of the November midterms.

Last week, Trump rallied with Hassan in Michigan, hailing him as a "BIG HIT" with the momentum to flip what Republicans see as a key battleground seat.

In a statement to Politico, Smith has vowed to return to the race after the victory, as he hopes to defeat Democratic incumbent Kristen McDonald Rivet.

"I look forward to working with Speaker [Mike Johnson] and the entire Republican team to expand our House majority and advance President Trump's America First agenda to lower costs for working families and make America affordable again," Smith said.
