Trump claims Columbus was the "original American hero" in push against Indigenous Peoples Day
Washington DC - President Donald Trump on Monday revived his demand to bring "back" Columbus Day, with his administration unveiling a new website to make it official.
The White House recently unveiled a page on its website titled "Sail on," which features AI-generated images to tell the story of Christopher Columbus' journey from Spain to San Salvador in 1492.
The site touts Columbus as "The original American hero, a giant of Western civilization, and one of the bravest and most visionary men who walked on the face of the earth."
The move comes after Trump last year announced the "recovery" of the holiday, even though it has been recognized at the federal level since 1971.
Trump's push was an apparent response to criticism Columbus has received in recent decades, which has led to the removal of numerous statues of him across the US.
In 2021, Trump's predecessor Joe Biden promoted the simultaneous celebration on October 12 of Indigenous Peoples Day to recognize the Native Americans who already occupied the Americas before Columbus' journey.
Trump and other critics on the right have insisted these "woke" efforts are attempting to erase their heritage and change the long-taught yet incorrect narrative that Columbus discovered America.
In a Truth Social post shared the day before the holiday, Trump argued the Italian American community has been "forced to suffer" watching statues of Columbus being taken down and promised "those days of plunder are over."
