Washington DC - President Donald Trump recently lashed out at Americans across the country who have been resisting the construction of massive data centers in their communities.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, the president argued that the "only reason" communities would not want the centers is "because they want to end up being backwards and poor."
"If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign," Trump wrote.
"The good news is that there are plenty of other places that want them. If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame."
In recent years, large tech companies have constructed massive data centers across the country, most of which have been built near rural and poorer communities.
The centers have faced pushback from communities over allegations that they produce significant amounts of pollution, waste leaks, noise, and other issues. In areas considering the construction of a new center, citizens have complained to local officials and voted to reject them entirely.
The issue has become a tough one for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections in November, as Trump – who has allied with tech leaders in his second term – has insisted they will improve the economy.
A Pew Research Center poll conducted in March found that the majority of Americans believe the centers harm the environment and the quality of life of people near them, but also believe they have positive effects on local jobs and tax revenues.
