Trump doubles down on vow to pay Americans $5,000 if Republicans win midterms: "I look forward to signing those checks!"

Washington DC - President Donald Trump has doubled down on his controversial promise to give out checks to every American if they help Republicans win in the November midterm elections.

On Saturday, the president shared a video on Truth Social of himself in the Oval Office, insisting that his promise to deliver $5,000 checks to every American is possible.

Trump claimed that this is because the country is doing "so well under Republican leadership," as he has brought in "massive amounts of money" from "tariffs and record-setting economic success."

"If Democrats win, you will have an economic depression... If the Republicans win, you will each have $5,000 in your pocket," he said.

Trump first revealed the plan in a speech at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas last month.

During a rally on Thursday, he reiterated the pledge and said the $1 trillion price tag would be paid for with money earned from the controversial tariffs he has placed on numerous countries – including US allies – in his second term.

Economists have been skeptical of the plan, arguing that the tariff money alone likely wouldn't cover it.

The move would also require Congressional approval, which could be a challenge as the plan has faced heavy criticism from Trump's fellow Republicans.

Trump spent most of Saturday morning sharing posts about the midterms, including one in which he said the GOP "must use every appropriate tool" to "swamp" Democrats.
