Trump makes wildest claim yet about $5000 midterm "dividend" to voters
Shannon, Ireland - President Donald Trump on Sunday not only doubled down on his pledge to pay voters $5000, but said that Washington can "easily" handle the extraordinary cost.
Prior to departing from Ireland on Sunday, Trump declared that the $5000 payments are "going to happen 100%."
"The reason is because our country is taking in trillions and trillions of dollars, and it's going to happen because the people deserve it because they were treated so badly by the Democrats and by Biden," Trump said.
He proceeded to launch into a tirade about the successes he has seen during his second term, notably the passage of the "Big Beautiful" funding bill last year.
Having finished boasting, Trump was asked why he doesn't push through such a payment now – while he controls both the Senate and the House – rather than wait for the midterm elections.
"I don't want to do it now because if the Democrats get in, our country will be in shambles and they won't be able to do it," Trump answered. "If we get in, we're taking in tremendous amounts of money, we're taking in over $20 trillion in terms of investment."
"If the Democrats get in, they won't be able to pay it. With me? I've always made a lot of money, now I make a lot of money for the country."
Trump's comments came after he used a speech to the Republican Midterm Convention to announce a $5000 payment to all US adults if the GOP wins in the November elections. Critics have referred to the promise as a potential "bribe" to voters.
"I don’t know but it’s easy if the Republicans win," Trump told reporters in Ireland. "$5000 to all adults in the country and we can easily handle that because we're taking in so much money."
