Trump puts his face on the $1 coin with new commemorative launch
Washington DC - Donald Trump and his administration recently launched a commemorative $1 coin that features the president's face on it.
On Wednesday, the Treasury Department shared an X post announcing the official launch of the coin in circulation, and a link to a website page where MAGA fans can purchase one roll of the coin equal to $25 for $61 each.
The site describes the coin as capturing "the spirit, pride, and legacy of a nation approaching its landmark" 250th anniversary and "an important chapter in United States numismatic history."
It also insists that despite the coins having finishes that "have never been placed into circulation," they "may be still used as legal tender."
The launch comes as Trump has pushed countless efforts to put his likeness on just about everything he can.
In his second term, he has slapped his name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts, built monuments with his name attached, and put his face on limited-edition passports and expensive visas.
The effort to make the Trump coin was in the making for some time. According to Politico, Trump signed bipartisan legislation in 2020 giving the Treasury Department the power to issue $1 coins "with designs emblematic of the United States semiquincentennial" in 2026.
That legislation served to evade a broader law passed in 1886 which prohibited the portrait of any living person from appearing on "currency notes, bonds or securities" after a Treasury Department official had his portrait appear on a 5-cent note.
