Trump ramps up push to investigate Lisa Cook with formation of new committee

Washington DC - President Donald Trump has set up a committee to probe Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over alleged "false statements" linked to mortgages, renewing efforts to oust her after prior setbacks.

The White House on Friday published a statement saying the committee would hold an in-person hearing on the matter on November 5.

The move comes just months after the Supreme Court blocked Trump's attempt to fire Cook, saying he had failed to give her notice and a chance to answer allegations that she faced.

"As President, it is my job to ensure the laws are faithfully executed, including by firing subordinates who cannot be trusted to tell the truth and follow the law," Trump said in the statement, dated October 7.

The notice added that the hearing would take place at the White House and last no longer than four hours.

No president has removed a sitting Fed governor in the central bank's 113-year history, and Cook has rejected the White House's mortgage fraud allegations.

The Federal Reserve sets monetary policy for the world's largest economy independently of the White House, but it has come under aggressive pressure from Trump in his second term.
