Trump acts coy after Kimberly Guilfoyle gets caught begging MAGA donor to pay off debt
Washington DC - President Donald Trump recently gave a dismissive response when asked about recent allegations of a pay-to-play scheme carried out by his former daughter-in-law and Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.
According to The Wall Street Journal, as Guilfoyle was preparing to face a congressional hearing regarding her appointment as ambassador last September, she reached out to MAGA loyalist and donor Eric Deters with a request to send $100,000 to pay off a debt she owed to American Express (AmEx).
Messages viewed by the outlet that were sent using the app Signal – which allows users to communicate discreetly – revealed her instructing him to wire the money directly to AmEx so that it "won't show up anywhere."
"Honey, please, I need you to get this done for me today," she wrote in one message, along with a prayer emoji and an attached credit bill.
Guilfoyle and Deters had reportedly been talking for months, as she had promised to use her role in the Trump administration and close ties with the president to try to get him help with his personal tax and legal issues, to which he agreed to pay her $1 million if successful.
She constantly sent him updates on her communications with the Internal Revenue Service and Justice Department on his behalf.
Deters claims he never sent the money to cover her bill, telling her it would ruin his marriage, and he eventually cut ties with her because "she never came through on anything."
When President Trump was asked about the scandal on Friday, he appeared to waver between dismissing the allegations against her and acting as though he doesn't know her that well.
"I just heard about it. It's too bad," Trump told reporters. "I mean, I don't know. She's...she's an ambassador. I just heard a little bit about it. I don't know too much, but she was always very nice."
Pay-to-play scheme blinds Trump admin. with fresh allegations
Guilfoyle is a former Fox News anchor and the ex of Donald Trump Jr. Despite her split from the president's eldest son in 2024, she has remained within the MAGA sphere and the administration, and has allegedly used the role to further her personal interests.
Reports of Guilfoyle's pay-to-play scheme with Deters comes after Democrats with the Senate and House foreign affairs committees last week urged the State Department to review her conduct, citing reporting that she has been traveling with the lobbyist of a Greek company she seeks to use her role to promote.
Trump and members of his administration have faced countless allegations of pushing pay-to-play schemes, in which they offer individuals reprieve from problems only the federal government can quickly rectify in exchange for something that furthers their interests, such as massive campaign donations.
The same day the Journal published their story, Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave a speech alongside Guilfoyle in Athens, during which he praised her for doing "a great job," and being a "strong ambassador."
Later that day, when pressed by journalists about her scandal, Rubio went into a long rant about how they are all doing their jobs wrong, concluding, "I'm not playing this game with you!"
