Trump’s DOJ targets Cassidy Hutchinson over January 6 testimony in striking move
Washington DC - President Donald Trump's administration is now targeting Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide who testified against him about his role in the January 6 Capitol riots.
According to Punchbowl News, the Department of Justice (DOJ) presented evidence to a federal grand jury on Tuesday, which they claim proves Hutchinson lied when she testified about events surrounding the attack in June 2022.
The investigation is being led by the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, which is expected to present more evidence later this month. The jury will then decide whether to proceed with an indictment.
In her testimony, Hutchinson argued that Trump knew the danger he was creating on January 6, when thousands of his supporters stormed the Capitol at his command, and gave other details that implicated him and others in his inner circle.
In 2024, MAGA Republicans issued a report seeking to discredit her testimony by arguing that other White House employees didn't corroborate her claims. Earlier this year, they took another step by referring her to the DOJ for investigation.
Since taking office for his second term, Trump has sought to use the DOJ to target a number of his political adversaries, particularly those involved in tying him to the violence of January 6, which he has insisted was actually "a day of love."
Hutchinson has continued to stand by her testimony, and even wrote a memoir in which she also claims former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani sexually assaulted her the day of the riots.
