Washington DC - President Donald Trump has unveiled a new Space Force uniform that appears to be inspired by an outfit from one of the worst sci-fi films of all time.
On Sunday, the president shared an image on Truth Social depicting mock-ups of the new uniform, which is "Inspired by the discipline and functionality of the Starship Troopers uniform, modernized for the guardians of the space domain."
Starship Troopers is a 1997 sci-fi film based on a book of the same name. The film depicts a dystopian future in which society is controlled by a fascist military that forces individuals to earn citizenship through military service.
The fascist military is sent into action when a colony of vicious giant bugs attacks Earth.
While the film was a flop at the box office, it has amassed a cult following over the years for its surprisingly deep commentary – which Trump seems to have missed.
In a two-star review, famed film critic Roger Ebert criticized most of the film but praised it for its "sly satire," arguing that its "underlying ideas are the most interesting aspect."
In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, who grew up near a Nazi military base, noted the Nazi-inspired iconography, explained said he set out to "make a movie about fascists who aren't aware of their fascism."
This isn't the first time the Trump administration has appeared to miss the point with a sci-fi-inspired move.
In 2025, the president was mocked online after the White House shared an AI image depicting Trump with a red lightsaber from Star Wars – a color often wielded by the franchise's most notorious villains.
