Trump weighs in on livestreaming firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter

Washington DC - President Donald Trump said Friday there has been no decision yet on whether to publicly broadcast the execution of a military base shooter, though he expressed support for carrying out the death penalty by firing squad.

"They are making a determination about that, but he will be killed," Trump said of plans to livestream the December 3 execution of Nidal Hasan by firing squad. "I really don't care how he goes, as long as he goes."

Earlier on Friday, Vice President JD Vance shared similar skepticism about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's announcement that the firing squad execution of Hasan, scheduled for December 3 in Fort Hood, Texas, would be made "public."

Vance told reporters on Friday that he doesn't "know that that's actually going to happen," and said if it is livestreamed as early reports claimed, "I'm not going to be watching it."

Hasan's execution is set to be the first in the US by a military firing squad since 1945.

Republican Rep. Austin Scott said he supported executing Hasan, but that "livestreaming executions is what jihadists do. America is better than that."

Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said broadcasting the execution would be "a barbaric spectacle."

"This is a gift to anti-American terrorist recruiters," Reed said.
