On Friday, The Washington Post reported that three anonymous sources close to DeSantis claimed the politician was planning to seek the Republican Party's nomination, and has reached out to at least one national political consultant about working on his campaign.

Allies say DeSantis now sees a political opportunity for himself following last week's midterm elections, which saw Democrats win a number of major races across the country and turned many states blue. DeSantis' state was a notable exception, managing to stay mostly red.

The Democratic sweep has largely been seen as a rebuke to President Donald Trump's first two years back in office. Many Republicans have argued it may be time for the party to rebrand itself.

In an X post, DeSantis denied the Post's report, accusing the outlet of "fabricating this out of whole cloth" in a "pathetic attempt to garner clicks."

DeSantis memorably ran for president in the 2024 race, losing the GOP primary nomination to Trump, who ruthlessly insulted him on the campaign trail with nicknames such as "Meatball Ron."

Though he was dismissive of the Post's reporting, DeSantis has repeatedly teased the idea that he may run again.

In an interview with CNN last Wednesday, DeSantis said he planned to assess the political landscape after he reaches the end of his gubernatorial term in January 2027 and will decide his future then.
