Madison, Wisconsin - Democratic socialist Francesca Hong narrowly lost Tuesday's Democratic primary for governor of Wisconsin.

The Associated Press said it called the race after Hong (37) conceded to her centrist opponent, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley (40), removing the possibility of a recount.

At the time of writing, Crowley has 39.8% of the vote to Hong's 39.4%, with 98% of ballots counted.

Hong is a former chef who has represented Wisconsin's 76th Assembly district since assuming office in 2021. She is a member of the state Assembly's Socialist Caucus and the Democratic Socialists of America.

In 2024, Hong helped lead the push for voters to cast their Democratic primary ballots "uninstructed" – in protest over the Biden-Harris administration's military and diplomatic support for Israel's atrocities in Gaza.

Hong entered the race for governor of Wisconsin after incumbent Tony Evers announced he would not run for reelection. Her platform called for universal childcare, free school meals, and a one-year moratorium on data center construction, among other priorities.

"The fight continues no matter what, because no matter who wins this primary, we're going to continue to fight for each other. We are going to collectively reject despair, and we are going to unite," Hong told supporters on Tuesday.

Hong's loss comes after recent polling data showed her with a sizable lead, and after a number of significant shifts in the race.

Crowley dropped out of the race in early July but reentered 10 days later with the support of Evers.

Former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes announced he was suspending his campaign less than two weeks before the primary. Another contender, Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, left the race in July after a campaign finance scandal.

Crowley will become Wisconsin's first Black governor if he defeats Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, who is endorsed by Donald Trump, in the general election on November 3.
