Gavin Newsom has been the Democratic governor of California since 2019. His second and final term will end in January 2027.

Newsom is known for his social media takedowns of President Donald Trump and other MAGA figures. Before entering the governor's mansion, he served as lieutenant governor of California from 2011 to 2019 and as mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

During his time as governor, Newsom moved to make California a "sanctuary" for abortion access and transgender youth, backed a series of gun control measures, and led the fight against Republican redistricting efforts. He has also sparked criticism with his conduct during the Covid-19 pandemic as well as his approach to homeless encampments, reparations for Black Californians, and other issues.

Newsom is considered a top possible contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. He has repeatedly expressed interest in a potential White House run.
