New York, New York - House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently held a meeting with President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner to discuss how Democrats can team up with the president's administration.
According to The New York Times, the two men met in New York City to discuss ways the White House can find "common ground" with Democrats so they can collaborate on key issues, such as immigration, housing, and the rising cost of living.
Kushner is married to President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump. He served as a senior advisor in Trump's first term, and currently serves as an unofficial one in the second.
Jeffries and Kushner had previously worked together to pass the First Step Act, a 2018 law that aims to reduce the federal prison population by easing mandatory minimum sentencing requirements.
Their recent meeting has sparked speculation that Republicans are aware they may lose their thin majority in the House after the midterm elections in November, which would mean Jeffries would replace current speaker and MAGA loyalist Mike Johnson.
Jeffries has openly discussed plans to hold Trump and the administration accountable for the many illegal actions they have taken during their second term, and may attempt to impeach the leader for a third time.
In a statement, Jeffries didn't acknowledge the meeting, but said the only way Democrats would work with Republicans is on affordability, an issue Trump has described as "a hoax."
When asked about the meeting in an interview with Fox News, Speaker Johnson said he was confident Republicans will hold their majority, but noted Kushner is not involved in "day-to-day" operations.
