Washington DC - Vice President JD Vance used a chummy television interview to bizarrely talk up a "supernatural" experience he said he had after losing control of his car.

Vance told the bizarre story during an interview with Kayleigh McEnany on Fox News' Saturday in America program. He had been asked about a near-car accident described in his new book, Communion, which he was promoting.

"I kind of came around a corner – I guess it had been raining – and I was going a little bit too fast," Vance said, describing the drive home from his grandmother's funeral.

According to the vice president, his vehicle went into a violent spin before coming "to a perfectly gentle stop right as I was going to fall over the mountain."

He described the close-call as a "supernatural" experience and a "little message" from God.

Things took an even more bizarre turn when he talked about a glass falling off a wall while he was at a conference talking to a friend about Christianity.

"You know, I think an atheist would dismiss that as, 'Oh, who cares? A glass fell off the wall,'" Vance told McEnany. "It felt like God trying to send me a message."

A former atheist, Vance has embraced Catholicism in recent years, despite publicly sparring with Pope Leo XIV on multiple occasions.

"I don't see Pope Leo as anti-capitalist," Vance told Fox News' Laura Ingraham in July. "I do think that some of the things that have come out of the Vatican on the immigration question in particular have been troubling, and ultimately I disagree with it."

"It's not just about the dignity of the immigrant, it's also about the dignity of the native-born people who have had their lives upended."
