Dallas, Texas - Democratic Senator John Fetterman on Wednesday night made a surprise video appearance at the GOP midterm convention during which he praised President Donald Trump.
In a minute long pre-taped message played during the event, Fetterman opened the clip stating: "Yes, I'm a Democrat, and why am I here talking to you today? It's because I'm a commonsense Democrat."
"I'm always going to stand with America; I'm always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti way of life."
He went on to introduce Republican Senator Dave McCormick, who he described as an official "that gets the job done," and vowed to work with him and President Trump in restoring America's steel industry.
The bizarre move comes as Fetterman has in recent months gained the ire of voters and colleagues by going out of his way to defend Trump and the MAGA agenda. He does all this while standing in defiance against his own party's platform.
Most notably, Fetterman is a staunch defender of Israel, a position that conflicts with the majority of Democratic voters.
The video also came as he has been facing allegations from former staffers about his poor leadership and job performance. Staffers are preparing to release information on September 14 that they say will "show Pennsylvanians exactly who their Senator is."
According to Axios, Fetterman later said in a statement that despite the video message, he is not planning to leave the Democratic Party.
