Marco Rubio is the 72nd US secretary of state, having assumed office on January 21, 2025. He is the top diplomat in the second Donald Trump administration and serves as acting national security advisor.

Before beginning his tenure at the Department of State, Rubio represented Florida in the US Senate from 2011 to 2025. He was previously a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008 and served as speaker from 2006 to 2008.

The Florida Republican unsuccessfully ran for president in 2016. He suspended his campaign after losing the GOP primary in his home state, ultimately endorsing Trump for president after he became the Republican nominee. 

Cuban-American Rubio is known for his hawkish foreign policy, particularly toward Latin American countries and China. As secretary of state, he has also been at the forefront of efforts to deport noncitizen students and academics for their human rights activism. 

Rubio has been floated as a potential Republican presidential contender in 2028 after Trump completes his second term in office.
