Washington DC - Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene slammed President Donald Trump after he appeared to try and bribe voters to support Republicans in the midterms elections.
In an X post shared on Thursday, MTG accused Republicans of taking aim at Democrats over socialist policies, while pushing their own brand of socialism.
"This week the [vice president] rolls out a $9,000 welfare plan for stay at home parents and POTUS promises $5,000 checks, costing approx. $1.6 trillion, if Americans vote for Republicans," Greene wrote.
"No matter which party you vote for you get socialism," she added.
Her remarks come after Trump delivered a speech Wednesday night in which he promised $5,000 to every American adult if Republicans retain control of Congress after the November elections.
Greene was once an ardent supporter of Trump's while in Congress, but after stepping down in January, she has become one of his fiercest critics.
In another post, Greene pointed out that Trump has promised similar checks before, and compared his speech to a clip from the 2006 film Idiocracy.
Republicans share mixed reactions to Trump's proposal
Greene hasn't been the only Republican to criticize Trump's bizarre proposal.
Texas Representative Chip Roy argued in an X post that "some of us think dependency is evil & soul-sucking in all its forms," while Marc Short, Trump's former legislative director, argued the president is moving further away from "fiscal responsibility and conservative economics."
Some have expressed support for the plan. Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno said he plans to "get a bill ready so that we can get the Trump Dividend passed immediately after the November 3rd election... because Republicans (and America) will win!"
