Minneapolis, Minnesota - Bernie Sanders-backed candidate Peggy Flanagan on Tuesday triumphed in Minnesota's closely watched Democratic primary election for US Senate.

Flanagan won the primary to replace retiring Senator Tina Smith with 59% of the vote, per the Associated Press. Her top challenger, US Representative Angie Craig, came in second with 39.4%.

A member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, Flanagan has served as Minnesota lieutenant governor since 2019. She was previously a member of the state House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019.

In her campaign platform, Flanagan supports enacting Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and pursuing bold climate action as well as a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. She boasts a number of high-profile endorsements, including from Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey, and Chris Van Hollen and Representatives Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Pramila Jayapal, and Ro Khanna.

During the campaign, Flanagan blasted Craig for voting in favor of the Laken Riley Act, Republican-backed legislation that criminalizes immigrant communities, and for receiving financial support from AIPAC's pro-Israel donor network.

"Together, we proved that Minnesota is not for sale. When we work together, when we organize together, and when we fight together – we are unstoppable," Flanagan posted on X after her primary win.

The Democratic nominee will now face Republican former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya in the general election on November 3.

The Minnesota governor's race will see Senator Amy Klobuchar go head to head with state House Speaker Lisa Demuth come November.

Klobuchar, who has held her Senate seat since 2007, easily won the Democratic primary with 89.7% of the vote.

Demuth defeated Donald Trump-backed MyPillow founder Mike Lindell in the Republican primary, with 43.4% of the vote to his 32.5%. Former healthcare executive Kendall Qualls came in third place at 21.4%.

Also on Tuesday, Representative Ilhan Omar overwhelmingly won the Democratic primary to retain her US House seat in the state's fifth congressional district.
