Vivek Ramaswamy tanks campaign with attack ad as new report favors Ohio Democrats
Columbus, Ohio - Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy may have ruined his chances of winning after doubling down on a "dirty" attack ad against his opponent, a new report suggests.
On Friday, Cook Political Report shifted their election forecast of the race from "toss up" to "lean Democrat," putting Democrat Amy Acton as the favored candidate to win.
The change comes as Ramaswamy continues to face backlash for pushing a 60-second ad featuring Acton's estranged mother, Donna Arthur, who calls her daughter a "liar," and tells voters, "Don't let her become your governor."
After its release, it was revealed that Acton and her brother were removed from Arthur's home after a grand jury indicted Arthur's second husband, Cledith, on a charge of raping Acton, who was 12 at the time.
Despite heavy condemnation from both sides of the political aisle – including from Republican Ohio Governor Mike DeWine – Ramaswamy has vowed to invest $4 million to continue airing it.
In their analysis, Cook Political Report describes the ad as "a deeply personal attack" that has resulted in the race "slipping away" from Ramaswamy.
Ramaswamy – a MAGA loyalist – has gotten support from the Trump administration; Vice President JD Vance recently told the party to "stop whining" over the ad if they wanted to win in the midterms.
President Donald Trump recently claimed he urged Ramaswamy to continue pushing the ad and dismissed the backstory about Acton and her mother as a lie pushed by her and the media.
