New York, New York - Mayor Zohran Mamdani has opened New York City's first ever jobs center, which will focus on helping New Yorkers find careers in public service.
According to a press release, the mayor's office said a "long-vacant City-owned space" located at 2 Lafayette St. in lower Manhattan will now serve as "a home for walk-in career services, workforce development events, job fairs and agency hiring halls."
On Monday, while attending the grand opening of the hub, Mayor Mamdani gave a speech in which he explained that while public jobs in NYC are known for their stability, good pay, and benefits, many New Yorkers have seen the opportunity as "out of reach" due to "piles of paperwork, bureaucracy that is impossible to navigate, and a lack of application assistance."
"Beginning on October 5, any New Yorker will be able to walk in between 10 AM and 4 PM Monday through Thursday and get help filling out paperwork and applications or connect with agencies that are hiring, and they can do all of those things without even having to make an appointment," he said.
The center will build on Mamdani's Business Express Service Team – known as his NYC BEST jobs initiative – which his office says has helped 47 City agencies and public institutions recruit staff since 2024.
Mamdani later joked in his speech that there is "room for everyone," noting, "I actually just heard from a Manchester City fan that he got hired. So clearly, we are not discriminating on who we are hiring."
Mamdani is a known fan of the English soccer club Arsenal, rivals of Manchester City.
