Alaska primaries: Mary Peltola and Dan Sullivan to face off for Senate as two Democrats lead for governor
Anchorage, Alaska - Democrat Mary Peltola and Republican Dan Sullivan will face off in the general election for US Senate in Alaska after Tuesday's primary.
Per the Associated Press, Peltola (48%) and Sullivan (42.8%) are by far the top two vote-getters in the crowded Senate primary, securing their spots in the general election on November 3.
The next-highest candidates include retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. (who shares the same name as his fellow Republican contender) at 2.4%, Democrat David B. Leslie at 1.1%, and Republican Gerald L. Heikes at 1.1%.
Two additional candidates will advance to November's election in the top-four open primary. According to AP, around 80% of ballots have been counted at the time of writing.
Peltola, who is Yup'ik, served in the US House from September 2022 to January 2025, becoming the first Alaska Native to do so. She announced her campaign for governor in January 2026 after narrowly losing her 2024 reelection bid to Republican Nick Begich III.
"Tonight shows Alaskans are fired up and ready for an independent voice in the Senate who will fix the rigged system, lower costs, and put Alaska first. We’re ready to win this thing on November 3rd," Peltola posted on X on Tuesday.
Sullivan is the incumbent senator now running for his third term in office. He is backed by President Donald Trump.

Four candidates will make it onto the ballot come November.
Republican Representative Nick Begich III (46.1%) came out on top in the primary to hold onto his US House seat. The next-highest vote-getter was Bill Hill (31%), an independent and former Bristol Bay School District superintendent who is Dena'ina Athabascan.
