Austin, Texas - The Democratic Party recently voted on their policy platform surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which resulted in conflicting messaging.
According to AP News, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Saturday approved several party positions, including one that calls for "concrete reforms" to ICE, and another that calls for its outright abolition.
While the vote is not binding and does not set their platform, which will be decided at the 2028 convention, it does expose conflicting views within the party.
In his second term, President Donald Trump has sent federal immigration agents to Democrat-run cities across the country. Their presence has been met with rioting and violence, and several people have been killed at the hands of agents, including at least three US citizens.
While some Democrats have aggressively called to dismantle ICE completely, more moderate members have argued it would not be a winning issue during the November midterms, despite polls showing the majority of Americans are not happy with his job performance involving immigration.
News of the vote also comes as some leading progressive Democrats have been facing scrutiny over positions they previously held, particularly calls to defund the police.
DNC Chairman Ken Burns argued the results of the vote show the issue of ICE actually "unites" the entire party as everyone agrees that Trump's agenda needs to be stopped, as "there has to be a better way."
